Building on an action-packed slate of matches in July, August and early September brought a memorable stretch of cricket for Clontarf, with silverware from three cup finals and impressive league performances across both the men’s and women’s sections. Here is a comprehensive round-up of how our teams fared across all fixtures played during August and early September.
A massive congratulations to our trophy-winning sides this month, including the W2s for lifting the Junior Cup and claiming the Division 2 title, the W3s for winning the Minor Cup, and our M5s for bringing home the Minor 2 Cup! Commendations also go to our M2s on an impressive campaign as Tillain Cup runners-up.
Our M1s experienced a highly competitive campaign in Championship action, finishing on a resounding high note. They opened with a tightly fought away battle against North County, narrowly falling short by three wickets. Staying on home turf, they faced another hard-fought contest against Phoenix, where the visitors managed to edge home in a four-wicket result. Weather then intervened in their next scheduled home fixture against Cork County, resulting in an abandonment without play. However, our M1s capped off the period in grand style with a dominant home performance against Civil Service, unleashing an outstanding batting display to post 297 runs before bowling out the opposition for 110 to record a commanding 187-run victory.
The W1s faced a challenging stretch in Premier League action against top-quality opposition. Their schedule opened at home against Merrion, where despite a spirited effort, the visitors chased down the target to claim a five-wicket win. A tough away trip to Malahide followed, with the hosts securing an eight-wicket victory. The side wrapped up their league fixtures on the road against Balbriggan, where another difficult outing saw the opposition claim a nine-wicket win.
Our M2s enjoyed a superb month filled with big league victories and a memorable run to the cup final. They started off in rampant fashion in the Second XI Premier League, putting on an extraordinary batting display to post 386 runs away to Balbriggan and seal a massive 195-run victory. Carrying that momentum into their next away fixture against Merrion, they produced a gritty performance to defend 194 runs and secure a 33-run win. Switching focus to the cup, the squad contested the Tillain Cup Final in Rush, battling hard before finishing as proud runners-up as Knockharley claimed an eight-wicket win. Bouncing back immediately in the league, our M2s produced another dominant home batting performance, scoring 319 runs to defeat Civil Service by 102 runs. They encountered a setback on the road against Pembroke with a 64-run defeat, before their return fixture at home against Pembroke was cut short by weather and abandoned, despite the opposition bowled out for 168.
The W2s delivered a sensational campaign, securing the Division 2 league title alongside major cup glory. They began their schedule in style with a dominant home performance against Terenure, cruising to a comfortable nine-wicket victory. Maintaining their impressive form, they followed up with a hard-fought 17-run away win against Leinster. The squad then saved one of their finest performances for the Junior Cup Final, producing a brilliant team display to defeat Leinster by 62 runs and lift the trophy. Returning to Division 2 action at home against Malahide, they kept their winning momentum going with a convincing 27-run victory. Their schedule concluded on the road against Merrion, where adverse weather caused an abandonment, crowning an incredible run that saw the W2s finish as Division 2 champions.
Our M3s showed great fight and character through a series of close battles in Division 6. Their fixture at home against Tyrrelstown saw a hard-fought contest end in a 54-run defeat. They bounced back with a thrilling, high-scoring affair away to DLR County, posting 274 runs in a nail-biting match that the hosts edged by four wickets. Our M3s got well-deserved reward for their persistence in their next home game, holding their nerve to defend 181 runs and record a gritty 13-run victory over North Kildare. Their stretch of matches concluded with an away trip to Malahide, which was ultimately abandoned due to weather.
The W3s enjoyed a magnificent campaign marked by silverware and consistent league form. They got underway in Division 3 with a polished six-wicket away victory against Balbriggan. The squad then turned their focus to the Minor Cup Final, putting in a fantastic performance to defeat Rush by eight wickets and claim the cup. Rejoining league action, they faced Rush the following day, coming up just short in a tight three-wicket away loss. A scheduled home encounter against Merrion was cancelled, but the side responded impressively in their next outing, powering to a nine-wicket home win over Terenure. They followed that up with a disciplined away performance against Leinster, defending 119 runs to earn a 13-run victory. A subsequent away trip to The Hills was abandoned due to weather, before their campaign concluded with a hard-fought six-wicket away loss in a re-match against Terenure.
Our M4s put in strong performances in Division 11, picking up crucial wins along the way. They started in sharp fashion on the road against Tyrrelstown, chasing down the target with ease to secure a comprehensive seven-wicket victory. Building on that success in their next home outing against Dundalk, the team produced a solid all-round effort to claim a 36-run win. Their campaign ended in agonising fashion away to North County, where, chasing 210, they fell just short in a thrilling match decided by a single run.
Our M5s capped off an impressive campaign by capturing cup silverware along and delivering strong league displays. They opened the month on the road against Ongar, sustaining a 46-run defeat, before a home fixture against Swords was abandoned due to rain. The team regrouped brilliantly in their next home outing against Adamstown, putting together a strong team performance to post 263 runs and seal a 42-run victory. After a setback on the road against Stillorgan, our M5s saved their best for last in the Minor 2 Cup Final, delivering a championship-winning performance to defeat Malahide by 20 runs and bring the trophy home.
