History

Probably since the days of King Brian Boru there was cricket played in Clontarf. The Clontarf Club was officially founded in 1876 and after a year or two of silence it starting making strides. In the 1880s the Clontarf Cricket Club was a healthy organisation with its ground off the top of Vernon Avenue whose colours rose and black were often worn to victory.

In 1892 under new management the club found its way to the field on the Howth Road. To help the exchequer, the Clontarf Football Club were invited to become their tenants during the winter season paying half the rent. This arrangement however was not conducive to preparing cricket pitches as the limited area meant the two clubs were forced to make use of the same patch. In 1896 a move was made to the present spacious grounds in Castle Avenue where both clubs had sufficient space for their needs.

In 1926 the club won the Leinster Senior League for the first time and the club’s first Leinster Senior Cup success came in 1943. The 40’s also saw the beginning of Women’s cricket in Clontarf. In 2013 the club won their first Irish Senior Cup.

The Castle Avenue ground has played host to many Ireland internationals and indeed a Cricket World Cup fixture in 1999 between West Indies and Bangladesh.
